Plot summary
In a respectable Rome suburb of row houses, Luca Attorre works as a freelance journalist but has trouble placing his features in the papers. His partner Susi trained as a ballerina and now teaches dance to overweight women, and money is short for them and for Lucilla, their quiet, imaginative six-year-old, who has severe bronchial asthma. Pierpaolo, Luca's seventeen-year-old son from an earlier relationship, stays with his mother and his grandfather in an Art Nouveau house; the grandfather is a trial lawyer with politically linked cases and a large income, and Pierpaolo helps the family economically. Mary Ann, an Irish art history student and devout Catholic, is the au pair for Lucilla.
