Plot summary
Sam Peek farms pecans in Hart County, Georgia, and is a local celebrity. He and his wife Cora are in their eighties, seven years past their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Cora dies of a heart attack and Sam and the family grieve. His daughters Kate and Carrie worry about his safety. A white dog appears near the house and only Sam can see it. He takes it for a stray while his daughters cannot see it and think he is going crazy. Sam plans a trip in his weathered truck to a school reunion, keeping it from the children.
