Plot summary
David Farrier, a New Zealand television reporter who covers offbeat stories, finds a set of online videos devoted to competitive endurance tickling. The competitors, athletic young men, are restrained while others tickle them. Chosen participants fly to Los Angeles, receive $1,500 and a four-night stay in a luxury hotel. Farrier asks the producers, Jane O'Brien Media, for an interview. Their representative, Debbie J. Kuhn, answers with a volatile refusal that attacks him as a homosexual journalist. Farrier brings in television producer Dylan Reeve, and the two set out to learn who is behind the videos and why the company keeps writing to him.

- D'Amato also filed a $40 million defamation and slander lawsuit in Nassau County court against his stepmother, claiming statements she made in the film were meant to injure his business and caused him mental distress.
- D'Amato turned up at the Nuart Theater screening of Tickled in Los Angeles on 18 June 2016 and confronted Dylan Reeve, telling him, "You need to lawyer up. You need to get criminal counsel."
- After Tickled's Sundance premiere, in March 2016, D'Amato filed a federal lawsuit against the filmmakers, saying the film falsely implied he used extortion and abused minors, and that he had no relationship with O'Brien Media.
