Thought Crimes (2015) on Netflix

Plot summary

Gilberto Valle works as a New York City police officer while keeping a second life online, where he writes at length about abducting, raping and eating women. When those exchanges are discovered, prosecutors charge him with plotting to kidnap and eat women, and the tabloids call him the Cannibal Cop. Valle insists the chats are fantasy and that he has no real plans. The charge carries a possible life sentence. The case draws national attention, both for its details and for the wider question of how far the law can reach into what people write online. Interviews with Valle and commentary from experts examine the case and whether dangerous thoughts alone can make a person guilty.
