Plot summary
In December 1998, Sloane sits in the bathtub with her suicide note until her abusive father calls her to breakfast. Then a woman screams at the door: the dead have overrun the neighborhood. One breaks the living room window and bites her father, who finishes it off with a piece of glass; Sloane flees the house and leaves him behind. Climbing into a neighbor's backyard to get away from another zombie, she meets two classmates, Rhys and Cary, and joins their search for shelter. The three find Grace and Trace Casper and their mother, who argues with Cary about how to stay safe. The group sleeps in an upstairs room, and Sloane remembers her older sister Lily, who left home.
