Plot summary
New York's Odyssey Detective Agency has taken on two clients, each a husband who suspects his wife. John Russo, a womanizing agent, trails Angela Niotes, the glamorous wife of a wealthy tycoon. Charles Rutledge and Arthur Brodsky keep watch on Dolores Martin, the young wife of a jealous man. Their boss, Leon Leondopolous, tries to keep the agents in line between visits from his secretary, Amy. On Angela's trail John meets a taxi driver, Deborah Wilson, whom he calls Sam, and the two take to each other at once. Charles is drawn to Dolores as he watches her in a hotel lobby. Arthur juggles his own romances while helping his co-workers. John's on-and-off partner is the country singer Christy Miller.

- Dorothy Stratten began an affair with Peter Bogdanovich while making the film; her estranged husband and manager hired a private detective to follow her, then murdered her and killed himself.
- Peter Bogdanovich distributed They All Laughed himself; his manager claimed he spent $5 million, but it made less than $1 million in ticket sales, contributing to the director declaring bankruptcy in 1985.
- Frank Sinatra let Peter Bogdanovich have the rights to several of his songs for a cheap price because Sinatra felt sorry for the director after Dorothy Stratten's murder.
