Plot summary
A group of teenagers goes camping, and an alien that looks like a frog comes after them and tries to mate with the girls. Mike is the horror movie obsessive among them: he has seen so many of these films that he expects a monster to appear at any moment. The weekend is a trip to a remote lodge with his friends, and there he senses at once that something is not right. His knowledge of horror movies, and of the way they work, is what the group can use against the creature. The movie pokes fun at the genre and refers to other horror films, Psycho among them.

- Rolfe Kanefsky directed There's Nothing Out There when he was 20 years old, and the film's satire of horror movies arrived five years before Scream was released.
- After There's Nothing Out There succeeded at the Independent Film Project film festival, the filmmakers tried to get a studio to release it, but director Rolfe Kanefsky said the studios didn't understand a film that was both a horror movie and a comedy about horror movies.
