Plot summary
While digitizing old case files, an officer named Sasi comes across the record of a dacoity and murder that was never solved, and he telephones Theeran Thirumaran, who once led the inquiry. In 1995, Theeran finishes at the top of his police training batch and takes a post as a Deputy Superintendent of Police. He goes back to Thanjavur, his home town, and marries Priya, the neighbor he loves. At the same time, a brutal gang of dacoits has been attacking houses along Tamil Nadu's highways, killing the families inside and looting their belongings. After one such attack in Ponneri, Theeran moves there to lead the inquiry with Inspector Sathya. Their first efforts come to nothing.

- The film is based on Operation Bawaria, in which a special team led by Tamil Nadu Director General of Police S. R. Jangid worked with the Uttar Pradesh Police and intelligence agencies to track down the wanted criminals Oma, Bsura and Vijay Bawaria. The operation was launched in January 2005 after the murder of AIADMK MLA Sudarsanam from Gummidipoondi.
- Director H. Vinoth had the idea of making a film on the case before his debut Sathuranga Vettai (2014) but forgot about it, until he opened a food parcel that was coincidentally wrapped in a newspaper article about the operation, which inspired him to work on the script.
- After release, communities objected to the film depicting the Bawariya as a clan of criminals; the makers said no community had been shown in a bad light, and the producers announced the controversial scene and the word describing the community would be dropped from theatres, television and streaming.
- The two-and-a-half minute animated backstory of the Bawaria used 4,000 frames painted individually. The animation team hired ten students from Government College of Arts and taught them to paint the frames digitally, finishing the job in one-and-a-half months.
- While shooting the film, the team was caught in a sandstorm that toppled a crane and damaged drone cameras; locals told the crew to cover themselves with blankets and wait patiently until the storm subsided.
- For a scene of Karthi riding a horse in a river bed at the Rajasthan-Gujarat border, the female horse Chandini ran for two kilometres without a break before stopping from exhaustion. Karthi said the horse had only been used in enclosed spaces before.
- In January 2023, director H. Vinoth said he felt guilty about the film's depiction of North Indians, and that this led him to sketch the protagonist of his later film Valimai as someone speaking against encounters and drugs.
