Trailer

Plot summary

Five trainee IPS officers, Mithran, Shakthi, Suraj, Kathiresan and Janardhan, help the police catch a gang that kidnapped four girls. A cryptic text message leads Mithran to Mahima, a forensic pathologist and his former girlfriend, and that night they see a social activist killed during what looks like a snatch theft. When the gang's leader walks into IPS headquarters with the Home Minister, Mithran shows his friends his research: unrelated incidents that fit one network bending the law for profit. Mithran names three men inside it, Ashok Pandian, who owns a pharmaceutical company, Charles Chelladurai, a mineral magnate, and Perumal Swamy, a chieftain. All three answer to the wealthy scientist Siddharth Abhimanyu. After training, Mithran is posted as ASP of the Organized Crime Unit and sets out to expose the illegal medical practices behind Siddharth's fortune.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Thani Oruvan (2015)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Thani Oruvan's budget was first planned at ₹15 crore but passed ₹20 crore because of delays and overruns, so director Mohan Raja and star Ravi Mohan gave up their salaries to finish the film.
  • Mohan Raja cast Arvind Swamy as Thani Oruvan's antagonist on purpose: he wanted an actor whose attractiveness would distract the audience from the character's evil, choosing "one of the most attractive male actors in this country".
  • Thani Oruvan was shot on celluloid by cinematographer Ramji, who believes it may be the last Indian film made in that format because the industry had moved to digital filming.
  • Arvind Swamy recorded his voice for the song "Theemai Dhan Vellum", which was used only as a promotional number and left out of Thani Oruvan; it was later reused as "Manishi Musugulo Mrugam Neney Ra" in the Telugu remake Dhruva (2016).
