Plot summary
Japan's space program has lost six missions to Mars, so the seventh ship, AAB Gamma, is fitted with every safety device its engineers can provide. Dr. Kato runs spaceflight at the center, and Dr. Berman flies in with the nuclear fuel for the trip. Captain Sano commands, with Lisa as mission biologist, Dr. Shioda as doctor and Miyamoto on communications. Berman suspects that a magnetic pulse from a UFO, not a design fault, destroyed the earlier flights. Radiation counts climb aboard, a UFO coats the hull with spores, and Dr. Shioda collapses with a severe fever. Sano turns the ship toward the Moon so that doctors can judge whether Shioda can continue.
