Plot summary
Vera is a writer in present-day Spain, and she has taken on a book about the Argentine photographer Emilio, killed in Barcelona in 1939. She feels lost, cannot stay with her husband and their young son, and suspects she is ill. Her former publisher, a Spanish journalist, brings her old letters and photographs in a suitcase and wants her to travel to Argentina and write about the man and the woman they show. Acting on impulse, she goes alone from Madrid to Buenos Aires. There she is hospitalized, and Matilde, a very old woman, lies in the next bed. Matilde's visitor is her divorced grandson Ernesto, who takes the recovering Vera to empty his grandmother's house.
