Plot summary

Claire Decker works part time for Social Services, looking into the affairs of people who died with no one to settle them. The sheriff of a small town asks her for help with a killing his department cannot close, because nobody there can say who the victim was. The dead woman was young and blond, and the only name attached to her is The White Orchid. Claire begins to move through the life the woman left behind, learning how she lived and who knew her, and she takes chances she would normally avoid. Answering the question of who the woman was means Claire has to pass for her.
