Plot summary
After a serial killer escaped him in Los Angeles, FBI agent Joel Campbell quits and moves to Chicago, where guilt-induced migraines send him to therapy sessions with Dr. Polly Beilman. He has no friends or social life. When a woman from his apartment building is murdered, Campbell opens his mail and finds a photograph of her that arrived three days before the killing. He takes it to Mackie, the detective working the case, and concludes the killer has followed him. Agent Ibby presses him to rejoin the investigation, and he refuses, until a phone call from David Allen Griffin, who says he followed him to Chicago and wants to resume their rapport. Griffin promises a photograph of a woman in the morning and gives Campbell until nine that night to find her.

- Director Joe Charbanic, a friend of Keanu Reeves after making music videos for his band Dogstar, wanted him as killer David Allen Griffin to play against type; Reeves said he was not interested in the script but was forced into the film when Charbanic forged his signature on a contract.
- Keanu Reeves performed the role rather than get involved in a lengthy legal battle and was paid union scale, while his co-stars James Spader and Marisa Tomei each earned $1 million for their work.
- After Universal Pictures acquired the film's domestic rights, Keanu Reeves agreed not to disclose what had happened until 12 months after the US release, in exchange for the studio playing down his involvement in marketing and boosting his profit participation, which brought him an extra $2 million.
- An early draft of the screenplay had Campbell in a wheelchair, a trait that was removed after the release of The Bone Collector.
