Plot summary
Michael Strother is a hypnotherapist in London. Detective Janet Losey, a police officer, comes to him for help with her smoking, and during the treatment a vision comes to him of a young girl floating under the water of a stream. The child is a ritualistic serial killer's escaped victim and has not spoken since. Scotland Yard asks Strother to draw out what she remembers, so that they can find the man behind the killings, who holds that through the murders he has found the key to immortality. He is married to Clara, who is pregnant, and their relationship is sometimes tense.
