Plot summary
Pablo Escobar builds the Medellín cartel into a cocaine monopoly reaching the United States and Europe, and his wealth makes him a benefactor in the poor neighborhoods of his home city, paying for schools, clinics, housing and soccer fields. A devoted fan of the game, he pours money into Colombian clubs and the national team, and the side improves as it holds on to better coaches and players. Andrés Escobar, unrelated to him, becomes one of the country's finest defenders, known for a clean style and calm, and earns the nickname El Caballero del Fútbol. He plays in the 1990 and 1994 World Cups, and the national team arrives in Los Angeles as a favorite.

- The Zimbalist brothers' first cut of the film ran about 100 minutes, far longer than a typical 30 for 30 film, and Zimbalist feared ESPN would not back a subtitled Spanish-language documentary that was more about politics and national identity than about soccer. ESPN approved a primetime airing of the full cut.
- Zimbalist said they conducted 43 interviews, most one to two hours long; many of the subjects had never spoken about the difficult, painful events and some had never been filmed before. Interviewees included the former President of Colombia, U.S. DEA officials and cartel members serving sentences for murder.
