Plot summary
Gilby Smalls is an aimless man in the middle of a meltdown. He has just been fired from his job, and he has lost his apartment in a fire, so he has no choice but to move in with his mother, who is obsessed with men. He is desperate to turn his life around. Then he meets the sister of a friend, and she seems to be everything he has been looking for. Wanting to make an impression on her, he tells one lie after another, each larger than the one before, and he builds a web of lies he cannot confess to.
