Plot summary
Two high school seniors driving to the Texas-OU football game in Dallas harass a pickup truck on the highway and call Vanita 'Stretch' Brock's radio show. She cannot get them off the line, and the attack on the road is recorded. Lieutenant 'Lefty' Enright, uncle of two earlier victims of the family, arrives at the scene the next morning. He has spent thirteen years looking into chainsaw killings across Texas. Stretch brings him a copy of the tape, and he asks her to play it on her nightly broadcast. She and a coworker also cover a chili cookoff won by Drayton Sawyer, the family's patriarch.

- Gunnar Hansen, Leatherface in the 1974 original, was approached to return but was offered "scale, plus ten percent", with the ten percent going to an agent he did not have. When he said he had no agent, they offered plain scale, which he found too low.
- Australia banned the film for 20 years, and an uncut New Zealand VHS from 1987 was still found illegally in Australian video stores, as the cassette box itself proudly stated.
- Bill Moseley landed the role of Chop Top after making a short parody film, The Texas Chainsaw Manicure, in which he played the Hitchhiker; a screenwriter showed it to Tobe Hooper, who loved it and remembered him for the sequel.
- The MPAA refused to give the film an R rating even after numerous cuts, and Tobe Hooper said the producers "kept chopping away at it". When the board would not go below an X, Cannon Films released it without a rating.
- A lengthy scene cut from the film had the Sawyer clan collecting prime meat for their chili by slaughtering patrons leaving a movie theater and rioting fans in a parking garage, using elaborate special effects by Tom Savini.
- The Primus song "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver" samples audio from the film of Chop Top chuckling and saying "Dog will hunt!"
