Plot summary
In the near future, an artificial intelligence called The Tangle connects the world through airborne nanobots. It acts as a benevolent guardian, and it has returned law and order to society. A government agency keeps watch over the technology to ensure it never turns rogue, and its staff work from safe rooms, which The Tangle's nanobots cannot enter. Margot Foster, a field agent, is found dead inside one of those rooms. Her death is the first murder in years, and the agency needs to investigate it.
