Plot summary

The world rates everyone by the frequency they emit, and that number decides their luck and their standing. Zak is a Low Born who wants more than his number allows; Marie-Curie Fortune is a High Born savant who cannot feel emotion, though she wants to feel love. Zak's teachers and his parents tell him the two are opposites who will never attract. He courts Marie through his childhood and his teenage years and gets nowhere. Theo, his friend, tries to help him raise his frequency, which is said to be impossible, and Zak's teenage experiments with magnets come to nothing.
