Gregory Ratoff

Biography

Gregory Ratoff was a Russian-American actor, director and producer who began on the New York stage before moving to Hollywood. Born in Russia, he was studying law in St. Petersburg until service in the Czar's army during World War I interrupted him, and he later acted with the Moscow Art Theater. He left Russia in 1922 and worked in New York's Yiddish theater and on Broadway before reaching Hollywood in 1931, where a role as an immigrant father in Symphony of Six Million led to five more jobs. He became a character actor, often cast as a foreigner or a villain, and appeared in What Price Hollywood? (1932) and I'm No Angel (1933). From 1936 he also directed, among them Intermezzo: A Love Story (1939) with Ingrid Bergman, and later made comedies, musicals and dramas under contract at Columbia. His best-known part was the producer Max Fabian in All About Eve (1950), and he appeared in Exodus (1960).
