Robert Evans
Biography
Robert Evans built a Hollywood career as an actor, producer, and studio executive. Born in New York City, he started in the women's apparel business, then in 1956 Norma Shearer spotted him at a hotel pool and helped him land the part of Irving Thalberg in Man of a Thousand Faces (1957). He played Pedro Romero in The Sun Also Rises (1957) and appeared in The Best of Everything (1959) before turning to producing. Paramount placed him in charge of production in 1967, where he revived the struggling studio with hits that included Rosemary's Baby, Love Story, The Godfather, and Chinatown. After stepping down in 1974 to produce on his own, his later credits included The Cotton Club, The Two Jakes, Sliver, Jade, and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. His memoir became the documentary The Kid Stays in the Picture (2002), and he voiced an animated version of himself in Kid Notorious.

A change of course
Evans did voice work on radio after high school. By his own estimate, he appeared in over 300 radio shows before turning 18, including a leading role on The Aldrich Family.
Big break
Darryl F. Zanuck gave Evans the part of Pedro Romero in the 1957 movie version of Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises, even though Ava Gardner, his co-star, and Hemingway himself did not want him cast.
A change of course
Dissatisfied with his acting talent, Evans bought the rights to the 1966 novel The Detective and considered playing the lead himself before selling the option to producer Fred Kohlmar.
Big break
Evans took over a floundering Paramount that was the ninth largest studio and, despite his inexperience, made it the most successful studio in Hollywood.
