Plot summary
Four young women live together in Los Angeles while they train as nurses and intern at the same hospital. Sharon works in the terminal care ward, Lynn in public health, Priscilla in gynecology and Phred in psychiatry. Phred falls for a doctor, Jim, though she has also slept with Jim's roommate. Priscilla, free-spirited, takes up with a biker who sells drugs. Sharon grows close to a terminally ill patient, a young poet with cystic fibrosis. Lynn falls for Victor Charlie, a leader of a Latino resistance group, and after a protest against the Vietnam War turns violent she starts a free clinic in the barrio with him.

- Barbara Leigh said her most memorable scene had her character nude on a beach taking orange juice laced with acid from her lover Richard Rust; when the scene was shot, Rust gave her juice laced with real acid, and she wrote that she was very stoned on camera.
- Barbara Leigh wrote in her memoirs that Stephanie Rothman interviewed her and, liking the innocence she saw, asked her to expose her breasts so she could see if they were worth photographing.
- Stephanie Rothman said she made the film while Roger Corman was out of the country directing Von Richthofen and Brown, which left the filmmakers free to develop the story of the nurses as they wished as long as it contained enough nudity and violence.
- Stephanie Rothman said she had said all she wanted to about student nurses, so Roger Corman hired a series of male directors for the sequels; the lesson he drew from the film's success was that exploitation films could carry contentious social issues, including feminism, and he encouraged his directors to do it.
