Plot summary
Detectives believe Henry Teague is behind the abduction and killing of a young teen, but they cannot prove it, so they mount an operation in which officers pose as criminals to draw out a confession. Paul Emery, working undercover, meets Teague on a long bus journey and wins his confidence, then introduces him to Mark Frame, another officer in disguise, who offers him low-level work inside what Teague takes to be a criminal organization. Both men stress that the organization prizes honesty above all and press Teague to disclose any criminal history that could endanger it. Teague admits to years in and out of jail, ending with a two-year sentence for assault, and insists the rest of his record is clean. Emery is said to be in serious trouble that the organization clears up through its contacts.
