Plot summary
Russian security forces have tortured Issa Karpov, a refugee from Chechnya, and he enters Hamburg illegally. Günther Bachmann runs a covert German unit that cultivates informants connected to Islamic extremist groups, and his people learn that Karpov may be tied to Chechen terrorists. Karpov asks Annabel Richter, an immigration lawyer, for help, and she brings him to the banker Tommy Brue, whose father once did a favor for Karpov's father. Karpov is told he stands to inherit a multi-million-euro account at Brue's bank. Bachmann's unit also keeps watch on Dr. Abdullah, a respected Muslim philanthropist suspected of passing part of his funds to al-Qaeda, while the German official Mohr and the American attaché Martha Sullivan take an interest in the case.
