Plot summary
Rose is a young English violinist whose career is guided by Charles, her agent, who has looked after her since her mother died when she was sixteen. Her father, the composer Richard Marlowe, left the family soon after her birth and lived as a recluse. Word reaches Rose that he has died and that she has inherited his mansion in France. Charles objects, but Rose decides to see the house for herself and to find out why her father went away. Inside, she learns that he spent more than twenty years writing a sonata for the violin. Rose sends Charles a sample of the sheet music.
