Plot summary
Rumors of the Slit-Mouthed Woman spread across a Japanese town. The stories say she wears a long coat and carries large scissors. An earthquake shakes a corpse loose from a closet in an abandoned house. Noboru Matsuzaki, an elementary school teacher, hears a voice ask whether it is pretty, and a boy who had been searching for the legend with friends disappears from a playground. The school sends its students home in staff-escorted groups. Mika Sasaki refuses to leave, telling teacher Kyoko Yamashita that her mother hits her. Kyoko, whose daughter lives with her ex-husband, is shaken when Mika declares she hates her mother, and Mika runs off.
