Plot summary

A retired man and his adult niece live in a small village in occupied France, and in 1941 a German lieutenant, Werner von Ebrennac, is quartered in their home. Without a word between them, the two agree never to speak to the officer or acknowledge his presence. Most evenings, while the niece sews and her uncle smokes, the officer comes in to warm himself and talks, at first in uniform and later in civilian clothes. He speaks good French, tells them he is an unmarried composer, and says this is his first visit to France, whose literature and culture he has long admired. He remains loyal to Hitler and hopes the occupation will join the two countries in a lasting union that benefits everyone. The niece never answers, though her fingers sometimes quiver.
