Plot summary
Montpaillard is a small wine-growing village in France. Its gamekeeper, Parju, wants to bring in Blaireau, the wily poacher who keeps ridiculing him. Fléchard is a young piano teacher in the village, and Arabella de Chaville, the daughter of the local landowner Léon de Chaville, is his girlfriend; her mother is Madame de Chaville. One night Fléchard accidentally knocks Parju out, and Parju is convinced that Blaireau attacked him, so Blaireau is arrested. Monsieur Dubenoit is the mayor of Montpaillard, Maître Guilloche is a lawyer and the mayor's political rival, Bluette is the director of the local jail, and Victor is the chief jailkeeper.
