Plot summary
Derek moves with his mother and brother Tobey into their grandmother's house in a new town and learns of a wooded shortcut. Tobey is dared to walk it alone and tells Derek he saw a dead dog and was threatened by an old man. Derek asks his grandmother about the path, and she tells him never to go there. Still, Derek and his friends decide to find out what the man is hiding. Derek and Taylor search the old man's garage and find dog tags; the man appears and they flee.

- The Shortcut was conceived as an R-rated film, but the financier Leomax only agreed to pay for it once Scary Madison committed to producing a PG-13 version, and Leomax then came aboard as co-producer.
- Director Nicholaus Goossen wanted to shoot far more blood and gore for The Shortcut, but the financiers forbade it because they wanted to submit the film to the MPAA only once.
- The Shortcut was the only film ever released under the Scary Madison label, which was retired in response to the film's failure.
- The Shortcut was written to be set in Scott Sandler's home state of New Hampshire, but the low budget sent the shoot to Regina, Saskatchewan, where each day had only two hours of night, limiting filming.
- Co-writer Dan Hannon, a Happy Madison development writer, said his screenplay for The Shortcut was "rewritten 50 million times" by other writers before production began.
- A 1960s basic bungalow served as the farmhouse, with its interior dressed for scenes set in the 1940s and 1950s, while a hockey arena stood in for the farmhouse's lower depths.
