Plot summary

In the One State, which conquered the world a thousand years ago, individuality is gone and people answer to numbers instead of names. They live in glass houses, so the political police, the Keepers, can watch them easily. Everyone wears the same uniform, eats artificial food and marches in rows of four while the anthem of the One State pours from loudspeakers. Once an hour they may draw the curtains of their homes. The Benefactor leads the state and the whole population replaces him each year, usually unanimously; the state holds that happiness and freedom cannot coexist. D-503, chief engineer of the spaceship Integral, begins a diary meant to travel on the completed vessel, which is being built to carry the state's recipe for justice and happiness to other planets.
