Plot summary

Coburg in 1957 lives off reconstruction, and its elite benefit from it, among them Schuckert, the developer whose brothel the city's notables visit. Schuckert favors the singer there, Lola, who wants money, property and love and dislikes the double life she leads. Von Bohm, a cultured, divorced refugee from East Prussia, arrives as the new building commissioner and hires a housekeeper with a young granddaughter. While he is out, the housekeeper gives her daughter a look at the house, and the visitor resolves to meet him; she is Lola, and she catches his eye as Marie-Luise. He does not know about her night job, nor that her daughter's father is Schuckert. Officials including his assistant Esslin and Mayor Völker know her from the cabaret.
