Plot summary
Anne Lister is an unmarried woman living at Shibden Hall with her aunt and uncle in nineteenth-century Yorkshire. She wants a woman to love, and someone to share her days with, and she has Mariana Belcombe in mind. Their romantic and sexual relationship stays secret, and Anne records it in a diary written in code. Mariana marries a wealthy widower, Charles Lawton, and the relationship breaks apart. Anne turns to her studies, and a year after the wedding she begins to think about finding another lover. A local industrialist, Christopher Rawson, proposes marriage; she turns him down, saying she could only marry for love. At church she meets a young woman named Miss Browne.
