Plot summary
Hester Prynne earns a living as a seamstress in the town of Boston, and Arthur Dimmesdale is the reverend whom she loves. Dimmesdale must go away to England for a time, and Hester remains in Boston. While he is gone, she gives birth to their child. When Dimmesdale comes back, he finds that Hester has become the focus of local censure.
