Plot summary
In London, an architect named Theo meets Ivy, an aspiring chef who wants to open a business in the United States. Inspired by her enthusiasm, he suggests he move with her. Ten years on, they live in Mendocino, California, married with twins, Hattie and Roy, whom they raise differently. Ivy had set her own plans aside for the children, and Theo surprises her with a property where she can open the restaurant she gave up. In a severe storm, the naval history museum he designed is destroyed, and her new restaurant fills with people sheltering, among them a food critic whose review brings a rush of customers. Theo loses his job and stays home with the children while Ivy becomes the family's earner. She feels cut off from her children's lives, and he resents her success.
