Plot summary
Rosa Louise McCauley Parks comes of age in segregated Alabama, where Quaker teachers at a private school urge her to push past the limits segregation sets. She marries Raymond Parks, a barber who speaks up for equal rights, and joins the Montgomery branch of the NAACP even though he doubts the group can do much against legalized racism. She earns her living as a seamstress. Riding home on December 1, 1955, she takes a place in the colored section of a city bus. When the white section fills, the driver, James Blake, tells her to surrender her spot; she stays where she is and is taken to jail.
