Plot summary
Tukhlia is a highland village in the Carpathian Mountains, led by Zakhar Berkut and his wife Rada in the 13th century. Burunda Khan, a Mongolian general, is marching his forces west to conquer new lands. Zakhar and Rada send Ivan and Maksym, their sons, to Tuhar Vovk, a wealthy boyar newly arrived from Daniel of Galicia, to ask for help. Maksym and Tuhar's strong-willed daughter Myroslava survive a dangerous encounter together, and Tuhar agrees to defend the village against the Mongols. An attraction grows between Myroslava and Maksym, and Tuhar forbids them from continuing it. Meanwhile, Burunda Khan's own warriors question his motives and his plans for the invasion.
