Plot summary
Father Michael McKinnon arrives in a Boston parish around 1935 and is introduced to Arthur and Eleanor Barret, the congregation's leading benefactors, whom the senior priest calls his favorite family. He is urged to befriend the couple, who give generously to the church, but keeps declining their dinner invitations. The Barrets want a child, and Arthur is sterile, so his lawyer approaches Roger Martin, a Harvard law student, with money to sleep with Eleanor. Eleanor calls the arrangement business only, while Roger becomes fixated on her. When Arthur forbids him from seeing Eleanor again, Roger threatens to expose the scheme.
