Plot summary
When police raid a house in Poughkeepsie, New York, they find more than 800 videotapes on which a serial killer recorded his crimes, from the abductions through the torture and mutilation of the bodies. State and federal investigators review the footage for his identity and for the whereabouts of the people he took. Because he numbered the tapes, they can follow his early crimes in order: an eight-year-old girl seized from her front yard, a couple named the Andersons who agreed to give him a ride, and teenager Cheryl Dempsey. In interviews, police and FBI officials describe the case, and the footage shows the killer only in disguise.
