Plot summary
Wesley is a deaf ten-year-old who lives with his family on a farm in North Dakota and attends a school for the deaf, where other students bully him. At home he gets along with his mother but not with his father. One cold day he comes upon a man who is injured and unconscious, and he brings the man into an abandoned barn on the farm. The man recovers, and the two become friends. The man gives Wesley lessons in standing up to the school bully and to his father.

- British deaf actor Danny Murphy, who is fluent in British Sign Language, won the role of the deaf boy who befriends Aaron Paul's character after an international casting search for a hard of hearing actor, supported by Deaf West Theatre.
- Because Danny Murphy and his character use sign language, the producers involved students and staff from Winnipeg's Manitoba School for the Deaf, hired Joanna Hawkins as an American Sign Language consultant, and filmed students and teachers in sign-language scenes.
