Plot summary
A young woman has been given a diagnosis of schizophrenia. A therapist looks into her mind and finds something other than madness there: sexual guilt that the taboos of society have produced. Group psychotherapy sessions are set beside fantasy sequences. The fantasy sequences present madness as it is lived from within, and they carry the despair of a personality that has come apart.

- During the making of The Other Side of the Underneath, alcohol and LSD use was rampant from the crew, particularly with Arden, and the shoot was so painfully intense that it brought an end to the Holocaust Theatre Company, with most participants parting ways for good.
- The Other Side of the Underneath is the only British feature film of the 1970s to be solely directed by a woman.
- After a July 1983 National Film Theatre tribute to Arden, the film was not publicly shown anywhere for 26 years, until July 2009 screenings at the National Film Theatre and The Cube Microplex in Bristol, and it was thought lost for decades.
