Plot summary
Maria and Michael live in Mumbai with their daughter Lucy and their housekeeper Piki. Maria has not recovered from the death of her son Oliver, who drowned in the family car when it went off the road into the water; she rescued Lucy but could not free him. After Maria takes an overdose of pills, Piki tells her about a temple in her home village where the boundary between the two worlds is thin. Maria can scatter Oliver's ashes on the steps and lock herself inside, and he will speak to her that night. Piki makes her promise never to open the door, whatever Oliver says. Maria agrees, and Oliver's body is exhumed and burned.
