Plot summary
Summer 1961. Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle, teammates on the New York Yankees, are both on pace to pass Babe Ruth's 60 home runs in a season. Mantle, the longtime star, has the fans and the press behind him; Maris, the reigning MVP, is treated as an outsider. Manager Ralph Houk moves Maris up in the batting order and the home runs come. Off the field, Mantle's drinking and late nights leave pitcher Whitey Ford covering for him, so Maris and roommate Bob Cerv take him into their Queens house, with one rule: no women. Commissioner Ford Frick rules that Ruth's mark stands unless it falls within 154 games of the expanded 162-game schedule.

- Most of the baseball action, including the scenes set at Yankee Stadium, was filmed at Tiger Stadium in Detroit, with strategic photographing and post-production effects used to enhance the illusion of Yankee Stadium's classic layout. Tiger Stadium was credited as "playing" Yankee Stadium in the closing credits.
