Plot summary
Salvador spends his nights on guard at a construction site on the outskirts of Mexico City, a place surrounded by empty lots. One night a van is left standing across the road from the site, and the next day a corpse is found inside it. He was the only person on hand when the van appeared, which makes him the single witness to what happened there. Word of it turns him into the focus of attention and of friction among the people he works with. He fears that speaking about what he saw would bring reprisals, and so he keeps it to himself.
