Plot summary

The naked body of a young chambermaid turns up in a back alley of 1890s Toronto. Inspector Brackenreid decides the death was accidental, while Detective William Murdoch feels there is more to the case. The girl had been employed as a servant by a very rich and prominent Toronto family. Dr. Julia Ogden, working as coroner, conducts the autopsy and finds opium in the chambermaid's system and signs that she was pregnant, which makes Murdoch more suspicious. A person who may have seen the killing is then found dead as well. Murdoch applies the science of his time to the inquiry and looks into the family that had taken the chambermaid on.
