Plot summary
After his mother suffers a heart attack on a bike ride and dies, fourteen-year-old Duncan Mudge lives on a poultry farm with his father, Edgar, who is sunk in grief of his own. Duncan has grown attached to the chickens and carries one along on his bike rides. On a rural path he meets Perry Foley, a neighbor with an abusive father, and the two begin to spend time together. Perry takes him swimming in a lake and speaks about his family. Duncan's feelings for Perry grow, though Perry shames him for the trick his mother taught him: calming a chicken by holding its head in his mouth.
