Plot summary

An outspoken atheist and single mother of two sons, Madalyn Murray O'Hair clashes with her Christian parents over her views. When she learns that her older son, William J. Murray Jr., is made to recite the Lord's Prayer at school, she takes up the fight against mandatory prayer. A Supreme Court ruling follows, and Madalyn becomes one of America's most hated figures. She founds the advocacy group American Atheists and brings William and her younger son, Garth, into the work. Debates with a local pastor bring in money that she puts into offshore accounts. David Waters, hired to manage an American Atheists branch, becomes someone she trusts. In 1995 Waters demands a million dollars from her, and after she refuses, three men abduct her, Garth and her granddaughter Robin.
