Plot summary
In post-war Essen, the Lubanski family has learned to get by without Richard. Christa runs a small bar, the elder son Bruno has turned Communist, the daughter Ingrid keeps company with British soldiers, and the youngest, Matthias, has grown up with no memory of his father. Then Richard, a coal miner held in Siberia for eleven years, is repatriated, and the boy meets him as a stranger. Matthias's hero is Helmut Rahn, a Rot-Weiß Essen footballer rarely picked for Sepp Herberger's national team. Rahn is bound for the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland, where the reporter Paul Ackermann and his wife Annette follow the tournament with opposing ideas about football.
