Plot summary
Marathon champion at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, Paul Averhoff has spent his later years in Berlin with his wife Margot. When Margot needs professional care, their daughter Birgit urges the couple into a retirement home, where the home's occupational therapy leaves Paul restless. He takes up running in the home's park, and when other residents ask what he is doing, he answers that he intends to compete in the Berlin Marathon. Margot, despite doubts, agrees to train him as she did decades earlier. His stubbornness disrupts the home's routines, and the management objects, while a resident who recalls his Olympic victory divides the other residents between support and resistance.
