Plot summary
In 1874, Konrad Koch, a new Oxford graduate, is hired to teach English at a strict boys school in Braunschweig. His pupils know England only through the prejudices of their teachers and parents, and class prefect Felix leads them in bullying Joost, whose mother belongs to a class the school considers unfit for secondary education. At an evening event, school board chairman Richard Hartung, Felix's father, criticizes Konrad for failing to raise children with strict Prussian discipline. To stir enthusiasm for a subject the boys resent, Konrad introduces them to football, a game unknown outside England. All except Felix embrace it, and Konrad folds the sport's strategy into their vocabulary lessons, so teamwork grows among the students. When the school board learns of his unorthodox methods, it bans the game.

- The real Konrad Koch was a teacher of German, Ancient Greek and Latin in Braunschweig who wrote the first German version of the rules of football and organised what is arguably the first-ever football match in Germany in 1874, between pupils of his school, the Martino-Katharineum.
- Unlike in the film, the real Koch's rulebook of 1875 still closely resembled rugby football, and he was a conservative himself who did not get into trouble with the authorities.
