Plot summary
Augustine Lofthouse is the only person left at a large Arctic base in 2049, after an event has killed most of Earth's population and radiation has contaminated the surface. He stays behind rather than join the evacuation, since an unidentified illness keeps him dependent on the base's medical equipment. Searching the base computers for crewed missions he might warn, he finds one: the interplanetary craft Aether, returning from Jupiter's habitable moon K-23, which he discovered. The crew believe their silence from Earth is a communications fault, and the base antenna is too weak to reach the ship. A young mute girl, Iris, is hiding in the kitchen; Lofthouse and the girl travel by snowmobile to another base with a more powerful antenna.
